Most business software is a compromise. A company buys a platform because it does 70% of what they need, then slowly trains the whole organization around the remaining 30%. The spreadsheet stays alive. The CRM becomes a place people update right before a meeting. The office manager still copies the same data between three systems because the integration technically exists, but not in the way the business actually works.
For a long time, that compromise made sense. Custom software was expensive, slow, and risky. SaaS was the practical answer. But AI-assisted development changes the math. It is becoming dramatically cheaper to build software around a company’s actual workflow instead of forcing the company to reorganize itself around generic software.
That is the bet behind Daedalus.
We think the future of consulting looks less like selling advice and more like building useful things quickly. Not “digital transformation.” Not another dashboard nobody asked for. More like sitting with a business long enough to understand what people actually do all day, then building the small internal tool that makes the work feel obvious after it exists.
Sometimes that means an AI agent. Sometimes it means a private knowledge system. Sometimes it means one button, one form, one dashboard, or one page that replaces five open tabs. The point is not to use AI because it sounds impressive. The point is to remove friction without losing the human judgment that made the workflow work in the first place.
This is also why we are skeptical of generic automation. A lot of the value in a business lives in the strange details: who reviews what, which exception matters, when a human should pause before sending something, why the CEO will answer a text but will never log into Salesforce. Good software should respect those details. It should fit the business closely enough that people do not have to pretend to work differently than they actually do.
As implementation gets cheaper, taste and judgment matter more. The hard part is no longer just “can this be built?” More often, it can. The harder question is what should be built, what should be left alone, and how to make the tool durable enough that it keeps being useful after the demo.
We think the firms that win in this next era will be smaller, faster, and closer to the work. They will build with context. They will avoid turning every problem into a subscription. They will help companies own the systems that make them better.
